Nature-based greening solutions for ecological and technical challenges

Nature-based Solutions (NBS) refers to the utilisation of natural organisms and ecosystems to provide technical solutions and services. As a science and technology, these solutions are gaining ground within the scientific community, as evidenced by the EU Research and Innovation agenda on development and integration of nature-based solutions.

It has always been accepted that green areas within or in the proximity of living and working area has many beneficial results. Under the pressures of rapid urbanisation, these green spaces have in many instances been depleted, and nature-based technologies can be used to replenish depleted urban ecosystem whilst providing a myriad of beneficial eco-system services:

  • Greywater and air-purification by plants
  • Capture of VOCs and particulate matter
  • Mitigating heat-island effect through evaporative cooling
  • Restoring and enhancing bio-diversity
  • Establishing green-bridges
  • Aesthetic remodelling
