Background and Activities
Fundamental research on the characteristics of plant chemicals is our central purpose. This research area evolved from the career of Hanswerner Mackwitz , director of the Institute alchemia-nova.
He collected his life-changing experiences while working for more than 20 years in the petrochemical industry, and studying the ecological, physiological and toxicological properties of many common synthetics that are being used in our every day life. Worried and troubled by the well known tragedies (Seveso 1976, Bhopal 1984 …) and chemical time bombs like dioxin, PCBs, halogentated compounds and heavy metals, he turned into a opinion leader and renowned researcher in Green Chemistry. This metamorphosis made him a prospector for appropiate susbtitutes to petrochemicals that are derived from renewable origin. At minimum, the renewables that we focus on impose no adverse health effects on human beings or the environment, and bio-degrade in an acceptable period of time. (A common petrochemical plastic bottle requires at least 450 years for half of it to decay in the ocean).

These efforts have led him to ‘rediscover’ the amazing potential existing in phyto-chemical retorts and storehouses collectively known as the Kingdom of Plants. From the most simple and basic molecule to very complex and powerful “mixtura mirabilis”, the “Bio-verse” offers a myriad of gifts and treasures to mankind. All it requires is a deeper understanding and intelligent use.
In 2000, Hanswerner Mackwitz founded alchemia-nova, the research institute for innovative phytochemistry. It is our strategy to screen and discover the most useful (and why not, profitable) potential applications for numerous plant chemicals and structures. We try to develop practical technologies to fabricate sophisticated products that satisfy needs in everyday life. Naturally, these eco-designed products are beginning to assert themselves successfully on the market place. In addition, we seek to satisfy the demands of increasingly educated and conscious consumers.
This enormous field of work requires a strong network of synergies. Thus, we cooperate with a great number of companies, institutions and people, as well as public and political interest groups. (more on this… ) In order to multiply our visions and findings, we work with a variety of media to spread the idea of a sustainable economy.
